Vermilion Bay is an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, connecting directly to West Cote Blanche Bay, and Atchafalaya Bay beyond that to the east, and separated from the Gulf by Marsh Island. It rests due south from Lafayette, making the bay a popular destination for anglers wishing to get out of the city for some inshore fishing. Freshwater inflows from the Vermilion and Atchafalaya Rivers keep this bay at a relative low saline level compared to other coastal inlets in Louisiana.

In the spring and summer months, Vermilion Bay is a hotbed for spotted seatrout and red drum fishing. The warmer the water gets, the deeper into the bay specks and redfish go, travelling as far north as Weeks Bay. In the winter, these fish swim into deeper waters outside of the bay and into the Gulf. Black drum and sheepshead are other species available in Vermilion Bay. The higher the saline levels in the bay, the more spotted seatrout move in.

Apart from speckled trout and redfish, there’s some great offshore fishing to be had for king and Spanish mackerel, cobia, and dorado, especially during the winter. There are numerous charters in the area available to venture out into the bay and beyond.
