Espiritu Santo Bay is located between San Antonio Bay and Matagorda Bay in the extreme southern region of Calhoun County. The bay system is sixteen miles long, five miles wide and forms a barrier between Matagorda Island and the mainland of the Texas coastline. Espiritu Santo Bay, which means “Holy Spirit” was named by early Spaniards; this name was applied to several bays along the Gulf Coast.

The low ridges that surround the bay are covered with several species of grass and oak trees. In the shallow waters, oyster reefs and tidal flats of mixed mud, sand and shell where blue green algae dominate can be found. The bay offers great fishing, hunting, sightseeing, birding and shelling along the many miles of unspoiled beach. Commercial fishing is still a very active industry and provides a lot of history and culture. Frequent visitors to the bay include the whooping cranes, an endangered species that uses this area for migration.
